Recently, I came across a statement that struck a chord with me — “there’s no unemployment in India, only laziness among youth.” While this might sound harsh, I find myself somewhat agreeing. A recent incident during my internship made me reflect on this. I couldn’t answer a particular question, and it made me think — maybe it’s not just about jobs being available or not, but also about how well we articulate our thoughts and approach challenges.
In my view, the real challenge for many young people in India isn’t just the lack of opportunities. It’s often a lack of the right attitude towards work and a way of thinking that holds us back. Skills can be learned, but mindset is something we have to consciously build.
Unfortunately, formal education hasn’t always kept up with the demands of the job market. Outdated syllabi in many colleges mean students graduate without the practical skills that industries need. The New Education Policy 2020 brings hope for change, but transformation will take time.
That’s why, as youth, we need to take charge of our own growth. Upskilling ourselves through online courses, workshops, and internships can make a world of difference. Pair that with the right attitude and a growth mindset, and you’ll see opportunities that others might miss.
Employers and the government can help by focusing not only on creating job vacancies — a short-term solution — but on long-term investments in skill-building and personal development. Most importantly, grooming young people to be good human beings will create a more responsible, adaptable workforce.
If you’re feeling stuck right now, remember this:
Upskilling yourself is important, and having a growth mindset can take you places. The path might be challenging, but every new skill and every positive shift in mindset is a step forward toward the career you dream of.
